Chair Test
Produced using one of the earliest public versions of DALL·E, this series uses the plastic monobloc chair as a test object. Found almost everywhere and molded from a single piece of plastic, its form is both generic and immediately recognizable.
When asked to reproduce it, the model seemed to recognize the idea of a chair without understanding how the object was constructed. Legs merged or multiplied, proportions shifted, and surfaces moved between photographic detail and painterly abstraction. The chair remained identifiable, but its structure was constantly being renegotiated.
The images document an early moment in generative image-making when machine interpretation was still visibly unstable. As these systems have become more visually accurate, this kind of uncertainty has largely disappeared, along with the accidental formal language it produced.
